Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary

Fostering for or Adopting from Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary

Our primary goal at OFSDS is to find lifelong placements for senior dogs where they can live the remainder of their lives as part of a family. Most of our Old Friends that you see at the sanctuary are available through our Forever Foster program. In order to grow, we are seeking Forever Foster homes to provide loving homes to senior dogs. The dogs that we bring into our program are those who are nearly or fully “unadoptable” due to disability and/or age, but who are still able to enjoy the remainder of their senior years with a good quality of life. This amount of time may range from weeks to months to years, and we aim to provide the best quality of life possible for our Old Friends during that time through loving homes, high-quality vetting and medication, and great food. Through sponsorships, donations, and grants, we provide medical care and basic needs to the dogs living in our foster homes. We do, however, unless there are unusual food requirements or other arrangements are made, ask that the foster family provide food for their Old Friend. OFSDS will recommend brands and types of food which are considered high-quality. Fostering for OFSDS is different than fostering for other rescues in that we hope that our fosters will be “forever” homes for the remainder of their Old Friend’s life. Although adoption is not expected, we will sometimes allow our fosters to adopt dogs from us; however, all adoptions must start as Foster Families. Foster homes must be within 100 miles of Mt. Juliet, TN. If you live outside our 100-mile radius and would like to adopt a senior dog, we suggest that you contact your local shelter as there are many senior dogs in need of loving retirement homes.

After applying to be a Forever Foster, your vet will be contacted for a reference. You will be contacted by phone for a short phone discussion and then an informal home visit will be arranged.

Once a Forever Foster home is approved, we will begin a search for the right dog for your family. You can schedule a time to visit the sanctuary to meet the dogs who would be best for your situation. It may be a dog already in our program, who we want to bring into our program, or we may start a search for the right dog for a particular situation.

Because our main goal is to place senior and unadoptable dogs in safe, lifetime placements, we do not charge any fees.

The following are requirements to foster for Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary:

  1. Your Old Friend must be kept as an inside dog and as a loved member of the family.
  2. The Foster Family must be willing to provide the time, environment, and attention necessary for the needs of a senior dog. There may be issues to contend with such as medication schedules, mobility problems, poor sight and/or hearing, and occasional disorientation. These things will be discussed during the approval process and then again for a specific dog at the time of placement.
  3. Foster homes must be within 100 miles of Mt. Juliet, TN. For a map of our approximate foster area, click here.
  4. Prior to approving a foster home, we will require a home visit and veterinary reference. In lieu of a veterinarian reference, we may require another professional reference.
  5. All other dogs who reside in the foster home must be spayed or neutered unless there are veterinarian recommended reasons for not doing so. All pets in the house must be up to date on recommended shots and preventatives.

While providing lifetime homes for senior dogs, OFSDS strives to raise awareness of the joys and challenges of living with older dogs. We are a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization. We do not concern ourselves with the quantity of time that they have left, rather the quality of the life that we can provide them for that time.
