Veterinary Technician

The Medical Department at Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary is seeking a full-time, licensed veterinary technician to join our team. The veterinary technician will provide medical care, compassionate attention, and routine procedures to geriatric aged dogs under the supervision of the Veterinarians, and will actively participate in the medical and surgical care of dogs, working closely with the other members of the veterinary team to ensure the health and well-being of our senior canine residents.. The right candidate will have a strong work ethic, be reliable, and work well with the rest of the team.


Responsibilities include
:

  • Provide compassionate care to the senior dogs in our program (patients)
  • Perform all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures
  • Prepare and maintain the exam rooms, treatment areas, surgical suite, and transport vehicle
  • Assist the doctors in medical, surgical, and dental procedures; prepare patients for surgery; assist doctors in administering anesthesia; monitor patients during surgery and recovery; administer fluids
  • Give injections and administer oral medications in accordance with hospital policy
  • Perform emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage
  • Assist in restraining patients
  • Perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draw blood for laboratory analysis; maintain file of lab test results and ensure test results are recorded in patient records
  • Take radiographs and perform EKGs and blood pressure readings
  • Admit and discharge foster patients per doctors’ orders, ensuring dogs are well-groomed and in a medically appropriate state; counsel Geezer Guardians (forever families) on various aspects of animal care; explain dosage/purpose of medications to Guardians and reinforce proper care and procedures to be followed at home
  • Properly clean all surgical materials and equipment after use; keep operating room stocked and prepared for surgery
  • Maintain an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system
  • Complete daily rounds of the sanctuary patients and bring issues to the attention of the attending doctor
  • Assist other staff members as required
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Maintain positive, cooperative relationships with other employees
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Schedule
:

  • 8-hour shifts, 5 days/week
  • Holidays
  • Weekend availability

  • Able to stay calm and efficient during medical emergencies
  • Able to work effectively with doctors and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all hospital staff members
  • Attention to detail and outstanding communication and teamwork skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrates initiative, creativity, and flexibility in all tasks
  • Ability and willingness to learn and keep up-to-date with changes in veterinary medicine and treatments
  • Able to lift and carry animals of up to 50lbs unassisted; over 50lbs with assistance
  • Able to walk or stand for extended periods of time, frequently in a bent position
  • Able to handle unpleasant odors, noises (ex. barking), and animal feces; may be exposed to bites, scratches, or contagious diseases


Required Education/Certification/License
:

  • Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology or State Certification as a Veterinary Technician is preferred


Experience
:

  • At least two years of verifiable experience working in a veterinary facility
  • Familiarity with Idexx Neo practice management software is a plus
